Abstract |
This paper presents a new control system, based on field programmable gate array technology, targeting the powertrain control of multi-motor electric vehicles (EVs). The control chip builds around a reusable intellectual property core named propulsion control unit, which features motor control functions with field-orientation methods, and energy loss minimization of induction motors. In order to improve the EV safety, the control system was extended with a wheel slip controller based on the sliding mode framework. The robustness to parametric and modeling uncertainties is the main attraction in this design, thanks to a simple connection that was found between the driving torque request and the model uncertainty...

Abstract |
The current research explores how shelf display organization and limited product quantity together influence consumer purchase. The authors find that, in certain cases, shelves that are disorganized and not fully stocked tend to reduce sales, but in other cases, disorganized shelves that are not fully stocked tend to increase sales. In particular, for products that are ingested (e.g., juice), purchase likelihood is reduced when the product appears to be disorganized and product quantity is limited....

Abstract |
Internal curing has emerged over the last decade as an approach to counteract the negative effects associated with self-desiccation in low water-to-cement ratio (w/c) mixtures. Specifically, much of the early research on internal curing focused on the reduction of autogenous shrinkage. Recent work has demonstrated, however, that internal curing can also be beneficial in reducing drying-shrinkage cracking, reducing the propensity for thermal cracking, reducing fluid absorption, and reducing ion diffusion in concrete....

Abstract |
Fine lightweight aggregate (LWA) is being increasingly used for the manufacture of internally cured concrete. Internally cured concrete can be viewed as a concrete that contains fluid (water) in the pores of the LWA (or other porous inclusions) that can be released to the paste after setting. Most research performed on internally cured concrete assumes the LWA has been prewetted for some time before mixing (generally lab studies use 24-h soaking, whereas this value varies in practice)....

Abstract |
This paper proposes the integration of steady-state models of several types of wind generators into a power flow algorithm with automatic load-frequency control. Since the system frequency deviation is considered a state variable to be computed by the power flow solution, this formulation helps identify the operating point of wind generators after the action of the primary frequency control when power imbalances have occurred....

Abstract |
High-frequency problems involving long cable PWM motor drive systems are well documented in the literature. Abstract |
Adaptive sampling results in significant improvements in the recovery of sparse signals in white Gaussian noise. A sequential adaptive sampling-and-refinement procedure called Distilled Sensing (DS) is proposed and analyzed. DS is a form of multistage experimental design and testing. Because of the adaptive nature of the data collection, DS can detect and localize far weaker signals than possible from non-adaptive measurements....

Abstract |
By means of Riemann boundary value problems and of certain convenient systems of linear algebraic equations, this paper deals with the solvability of a class of singular integral equations with rotations and degenerate kernel within the case of a coefficient vanishing on the unit circle. All the possibilities about the index of the coefficients in the corresponding equations are considered and described in detail, and explicit formulas for their solutions are obtained. An example of application of the method is shown at the end of the last section....

Abstract |
Motivated by the development of power semiconductor technologies, flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices and their penetration in the field of electrical power systems, an educational challenge in complementing theoretical knowledge with practical experience is recognized. In this paper, the design and implementation of a lab-scale hardware and software setup is presented. Three small-scale devices, including a static VAr compensator (SVC) unit, a transmission line model, and a substation, are developed....

Abstract |
This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the spinning reserve requirements of generating systems, taking into consideration the loss of load risk due to failures in the generation and transmission network. In order to provide a more flexible and robust tool to assess the risk indices for bulk power systems, a Monte Carlo simulation based tool is proposed. Due to the rarity of the events associated with this particular problem, an unbiased estimator based on importance sampling is applied,...

Abstract |
Modern electric vehicles are most often designed with actuator redundancy and in-wheel propulsion, a combination that appears particularly suitable for the design of motion controllers that can optimally blend multiple objectives, such as dynamic, safety and driver-oriented. This paper considers such a technological setting and concentrates on the design of a path-following algorithm with minimum-time features, with the aim of combining performance and energy-oriented optimization of the vehicle motion. Specifically, an approximate minimum-time trajectory is obtained by appropriate convexification of the resulting optimization problem. The effectiveness of the approach is assessed by means of simulation tests carried out on the CarSim vehicle simulation environment....

Abstract |
The glycosylated and halogenated dialkylresorcinol (DAR) compounds bartolosides A–D (1–4) were recently discovered from marine cyanobacteria and represent a novel family of glycolipids, encoded by the brt biosynthetic gene cluster. Here, we report the isolation and NMR- and MS-based structure elucidation of monoglycosylated bartolosides E–K (5–11), obtained from Synechocystis salina LEGE 06099, a strain closely related to the cyanobacterium that produces the diglycosylated 2–4. In addition...

Abstract |
The development of a DC magnetic field sensor based on a magnetoelectric (ME) PVDF/Metglas composite is reported. The ME sensing composite has an electromechanical resonance frequency close to 25.4 kHz, a linear response (r2 = 0.997) in the 0-2 Oe DC magnetic field range, and a maximum output voltage of 112 mV (ME voltage coefficient a33 of ک30 V·cm-1·Oe-1)....

Abstract |
The most critical equipment in mining concentrator plants is the grinding mill. One very important charge condition that can produce a catastrophic failure during the starting of grinding mills is the compacting of the load inside the mill, especially after long downtimes. This condition is usually named frozen charge....

Abstract |
The present work aims to evaluate the feasibility of iron ore tailings from tailing dams as an alternative material for road infrastructure. The iron ore tailings were characterized according to their chemical, mineralogical, environmental, and physical properties. Subsequently, the tailings were chemically stabilized using cement, lime, or steelmaking slag as binder. ...

Abstract |
In this paper, we first address the dynamics of the elegant multivalued quaternionic Hopfield neural network (MV-QHNN) proposed by Minemoto et al. Contrary to what was expected, we show that the MV-QHNN, as well as one of its variation, does not always come to rest at an equilibrium state under the usual conditions. In fact, we provide simple examples in which the network yields a periodic sequence of quaternionic state vectors....
