Campylobacter spp. may be responsible for unreported outbreaks of food-borne disease. The detection of these outbreaks is made more difficult by the fact that appropriate methods for detecting clusters of Campylobacter have not been well defined. We have compared the characteristics of five molecular typing methods on Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli isolates obtained from human and nonhuman sources during sentinel site surveillance during a 3-year period. Comparative genomic fingerprinting (CGF) appears to be one of the optimal methods for the detection of clusters of cases, and it could be supplemented by the sequencing of the flaA gene short variable region (flaA SVR sequence typing), with or without subsequent multilocus sequence typing (MLST). ... Natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal cylinder is of importance in a large number of applications. Although the topic has a rich history for unconfined cylinders, maximizing the free convective cooling through the introduction of sidewalls and creation of a chimney effect is considerably less studied. One of the most difficult undertakings for any employer is carrying out a decision to terminate an employee. Of all the employment-related actions taken by employers, the act of termination creates the greatest risk of legal liability. Many claims of employment discrimination filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission arise from the act of termination. In many federal courts, employment-related lawsuits account for more than 50% of all court filings; these lawsuits cover a wide range of subjects, such as failure to hire, defamation, breach of contract, and harassment, to name a few. However, most employees sue because they have lost their job or fear they will lose their job. Because these individuals have virtually nothing to lose, they often see filing a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or filing a lawsuit as the only viable option—often suing for wrongful discharge. With a thoughtful review of the issues and the legislation addressed in this article, health care managers can reduce the unnecessary risk of expensive, time-consuming litigation. ... Falling particle receivers are being evaluated as an alternative to conventional fluid-based solar receivers to enable higher temperatures and higher efficiency power cycles with direct storage for concentrating solar power (CSP) applications. This paper presents studies of the particle mass flow rate, velocity, particle-curtain opacity and density, and other characteristics of free-falling ceramic particles as a function of different discharge slot apertures. The methods to characterize the particle flow are described, and results are compared to theoretical and numerical models for unheated conditions.
