While it is well known that short selling predicts future negative stock price performance, it has not been established whether short selling predicts future negative operating performance. We find that firms in the top decile of increases in short interest (an increase of about four percentage points) experience a 21% subsequent decline in operating performance relative to matched control firms. The greater the increase in short interest, the larger the decline in operating performance. The results are robust to alternative performance measures and to sample splits based on firm size. These results suggest that short interest may reflect private information about firm fundamentals rather than other factors that may drive stock price changes. ...

Optimization of dynamic systems often requires system simulation. Several important classes of dynamic system models have computationally expensive time derivative functions, resulting in simulations that are significantly slower than real time. This makes design optimization based on these models impractical. An efficient two-loop method, based on surrogate modeling, is presented here for solving dynamic system design problems with computationally expensive derivative functions. This paper presents a three-dimensional (3-D) digital electromagnetic actuator able to reach 12 discrete positions distributed in a 3-D space. The mobile part of this actuator includes a cuboid permanent magnet fixed in a hexagonal casing. The mobile part is able to reach six discrete positions in xy-plane at level z 1 and the remaining six discrete positions at level z 2 . The switching of the mobile part in xy-plane is achieved by injecting currents in the fixed planar wires situated beneath it.
