In this paper, we propose a smart charger for electric vehicles with a power-quality compensator. The proposed smart charger consists of four-leg insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Three legs are used for a single-phase full-bridge-based pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) rectifier, which converts power from ac to dc during the battery-charging operation or from dc to ac during the battery-discharging operation. ...

We consider the bounded real lemma for internally positive linear time-invariant systems. We show that the H? norm of such systems can be evaluated by checking the existence of a certain diagonal quadratic storage function. Taking advantage of this fact, the problem of designing a structured static state feedback controller achieving internal stability, contractiveness, and internal positivity in closed loop becomes convex and tractable. ...

The total synthesis of the proposed structure of similanamide, a cyclic hexapeptide recently isolated from the marine sponge-associated fungus Aspergillus similanensis KUFA 0013, was achieved by solid-phase synthesis of a linear precursor and solution-phase macrolactamization. The NMR spectra of our synthetic final product were not identical to those of the isolated material and led us to conclude that similanamide is identical to PF1171C, a previously reported diastereomeric hexapeptide. ...

Background: In general, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems are said to be flexible to various kind of fuels such as natural gas and petroleum gas. The fuels are reformed at a reformer and supplied to anode. Cell testing for 10 to 100 W-class SOFCs needs steady supply of a real reformate gas or a simulated reformate gas. However, it is difficult to reform heavier hydrocarbons without know-how and to evaporate small flow-rate of water. In addition, cell performance comparison with reformate gases of various fuels has been scarcely reported. Method of approach: ...

Abstract
Gaze tracking (GT) systems have attracted the attention of researchers as well as the commercial sector. Commercial systems are readily available, but they are usually fabricated at the same size. In this study, we propose a three-dimensional (3-D)-printable frame and an open-source system to fabricate a wearable GT system with low-cost configuration and reasonable performance. A 3-D printer achieves repeatable and adjustable design. The estimated price to make the GT hardware is less than €100, and the system's average accuracy is 2.58°. Our GT system has a 24-Hz sampling rate, which can analyze human interest points. Another contribution of this study is developing the automatic discrimination of interest objects using our proposed GT and machine learning. The output of this combination system is a database that consists of labeled objects. The label with the highest frequency indicates the object of the highest interest for a corresponding user. Our combination system has a 7-Hz sampling rate and a 3.8% classification error. ...

Enhanced quantitative urine culture (EQUC) detects live microorganisms in the vast majority of urine specimens reported as “no growth” by the standard urine culture protocol. One hundred fifty adult urogynecology patient-participants were characterized using a self-completed validated UTI symptom assessment (UTISA) questionnaire and asked “Do you feel you have a UTI?” Women responding negatively were recruited into the no-UTI cohort, while women responding affirmatively were recruited into the UTI cohort ...

Abstract
To improve the positioning accuracy of galvanometer scanners, we have developed a thermal demagnetization compensation (TDC) approach. In recent years, increase in power consumption of the galvanometer scanner results from high-speed motion; therefore, a magnet's temperature rise increases. Generated torque of the galvanometer scanner decreases with a rise in temperature because of demagnetization so that positioning ability of the galvanometer scanner declines. ...

Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa) is consumed as a staple food globally, and rice bran, the byproduct, is an unused biomass that is ultimately discarded as waste. Thus, in the present study, a technique for producing tyrosinase inhibitory peptides from rice bran protein (RBP) was developed. Simultaneous treatment of RBP with chymotrypsin and trypsin produced numerous peptides. Subsequently, six tyrosinase inhibitory peptides were isolated from the hydrolysate fractions in a multistep purification protocol, and their amino acid sequences were determined. ...

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis genes iolG, iolW, iolX, ntdC, yfiI, yrbE, yteT, and yulF belong to the Gfo/Idh/MocA family. The functions of iolG, iolW, iolX, and ntdC are known; however, the functions of the others are unknown. We previously reported the B. subtilis cell factory simultaneously overexpressing iolG and iolW to achieve bioconversion of myo-inositol (MI) into scyllo-inositol (SI). ...

Abstract
The secondary metabolite aphidicolin has previously been produced by Aspergillus oryzae after the heterologous expression of four biosynthetic enzymes isolated from Phoma betae. In this study, we examined the subcellular localization of aphidicolin biosynthetic enzymes in A. oryzae. Fusion of green fluorescent protein to each enzyme showed that geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase and terpene cyclase are localized to the cytoplasm and the two monooxygenases (PbP450-1 and PbP450-2) are localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). ...

Abstract
This study aims to develop a clinging device for structural inspection robots, which are expected to be used to reduce the cost of inspection of aging civil infrastructure and industrial structures. In a previous study, an electro-permanent magnet (EPM)-based clinging device that could electrically turn on and off the magnetic adhesive force against steel structures was proposed. In this study, a more versatile design of the clinging device was firstly presented, and a considerable difficulty regarding the activation process of the EPM which might impair the reliability of the clinging device was stated based on mathematical modeling and experiments. ...

Abstract
The tiles that are used to protect the exterior of a building may separate from the concrete substrate and fall off as they age. To prevent accidents, a tiled wall can be inspected using various methods. In this study, nondestructive inspection (NDI) with microwave electromagnetic waves (EMWs) is used for detecting tile separation, and the chance of detecting the separation by this method is discussed in this paper. Here, the inspection apparatus is used to detect voids in concrete, including voids that simulate tile separation. An antenna attached to the apparatus transmits and receives microwaves to obtain a reflected intensity from the concrete. ...
