The paper presents a corpus-based information-structural analysis of the German discourse particles aber and auch in the so-called post-initial position, i.e. between the pre-field constituent and the finite verb in main clauses. Based on corpus data, I argue that aber and auch in this position mark the boundary between the focus and the background of the sentence that hosts them. We compared two multistep diagnostic algorithms based on C. Diff Quik Chek Complete and, as confirmatory tests, GenomEra C. difficile and Xpert C. difficile. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 87.2%, 99.7%, 97.1%, and 98.3%, respectively, for the GenomEra-based algorithm and 89.7%, 99.4%, 95.5%, and 98.6%, respectively, for the Xpert-based algorithm. In this paper, we introduce continuous-time linear compartmental switched systems and investigate their stability and stabilizability properties. By their nature, these systems are always stable. Necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability for arbitrary switching functions, and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability under certain dwell-time conditions on the switching functions are proposed. Finally, stabilizability is thoroughly investigated and proved to be equivalent to the existence of a Hurwitz convex combination of the subsystem matrices, a condition that, for positive switched systems, is only sufficient for stabilizability. ...

We investigate how industry and stage specialization of Private Equity (PE) firms affect the likelihood to exit investments by means of trade sales, Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), or Secondary Buyouts (SBOs). Our empirical analysis relies on competing risks models. Using a sample of 818 Leveraged Buyouts (LBOs) by US and European PE firms over the period 2000–2015, we find that both industry and stage specializations of PEs increase the likelihood of exiting via IPO, whereas only industry specialization positively affects the likelihood of divesting through a trade sale. Finally, SBOs are more likely for non-specialized investors. ...

Based on the “wisdom of the crowd” effect, consumer-generated online reviews are supposed to help consumers make more accurate product evaluations. However, the large amount of information in the reviews, coupled with conflicting opinions, can make it difficult for consumers to identify and consider those attributes relevant to their decision. Thus, while online product reviews are generally believed to empower consumers, we suggest that they may have “swaying” effects in that attribute preferences (i.e., the relative importance consumers place on various product attributes in product evaluation) are more heavily influenced by characteristics of the online reviews rather than by the relevance of the attributes to the consumers’ decision context. ...

Molecular diagnostics are increasingly used in the blood bank industry. A device that can combine simultaneous detection of multiple targets with the flexibility of inclusion of emerging pathogens is desirable for testing blood products. A highly multiplexed blood-borne pathogen panel (BBPP) using dual-label probe chemistry (TaqMan assays) was developed for simultaneous detection and discrimination of 17 viral pathogens in human plasma samples and 13 bacterial and protozoan pathogens in human blood samples on the OpenArray platform. The custom BBPP OpenArray plate was tested for specificity and analytical sensitivity with purified nucleic acids from each pathogen and with pathogen-spiked human blood and plasma samples. The results of analytical validation of known samples yielded decision trees for identification of coded samples: pathogens spiked in human plasma or whole blood. ...

This paper presents a novel two-dimensional real-time modeling approach for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) based on a tridiagonal matrix algorithm (Thomas algorithm). The Thomas algorithm consists of a forward elimination and a backward substitution, its arithmetic complexity of computations being much lower than the Gaussian elimination. In order to use this advanced numerical solver, the differential equations of reactant gas convection and diffusion phenomena in serpentine channels are transformed into a tridiagonal equations system. ...
