Abstract
Pile setup in cohesive soils has been a known phenomenon for several decades. However, a systematic field investigation to provide the needed data to develop analytical procedures and integrate pile setup into the design method rarely exists. This paper summarizes a recently completed field investigation on five fully instrumented steel H-piles embedded in cohesive soils, while a companion paper discusses the development of the pile setup method. During the field investigation, detailed soil characterization, monitoring of soil total lateral stress and pore-water pressure, collection of pile dynamic restrike data as a function of time, and vertical static load tests were completed. ...

Abstract
This paper establishes a methodology to quantify pile setup by using recent field test data that was presented in a companion paper for steel H-piles driven in cohesive soils. Existing methods found in literature for the same purpose either require restrikes of piles onsite or are developed for a specific soil type and seldom use easily quantifiable soil properties, despite their significant influence on pile setup. ...

Abstract
Direct measurement of a permeability function, k(è) (where è = suction), of an unsaturated soil is often tedious and time-consuming. Thus, researchers have proposed various semiempirical predictive methods to determine k(è) indirectly from a soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) or a particle-size distribution. Also, stress effects on k(è) are generally not considered. To explore any stress effect on k(è) , a new 1-m-high stress-controllable soil column is developed to measure stress-dependent SWCC (SDSWCC) and k(è) of soils directly. ...

Abstract
A patent-pending single design of an ultralow-loss (ULL) magnetic ballast for T5 high-efficient (T5-HE) fluorescent lamps rated from 14 to 35 W is presented. Based on the use of a nonlinear physical low-pressure discharge lamp model, it is discovered that the same set of ballast parameters can be chosen for operating T5-HE 14-, 21-, 28-, and 35-W lamps at their respective rated power at a mains voltage in the range of 220-240 V. With energy efficiency higher than and lifetime much longer than their electronic counterparts and being recyclable, the ULL ballasts offer a more environmentally friendly solution to T5-HE lamps than electronic ballasts. ...

Tunnel excavation inevitably induces stress changes in the surrounding soil leading to significant ground movements and additional stress in nearby pipelines. Most previous studies simplified tunnel–pipe interaction as a plane strain problem and focused on the case in which the pipeline intersects the tunnel perpendicularly. In this study, centrifuge tests were conducted to investigate the three-dimensional response of the ground and pipeline to tunneling, considering different pipeline orientations with respect to the tunneling direction. ...

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate resource allocation algorithm design for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems employing a full-duplex (FD) base station for serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink and uplink users simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is obtained from the solution of a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the weighted sum system throughput. We apply monotonic optimization to develop an optimal joint power and subcarrier allocation policy. ...

Abstract
In this paper, we study power-efficient resource allocation for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access systems. The resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem which jointly designs the power allocation, rate allocation, user scheduling, and successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding policy for minimizing the total transmit power. The proposed framework takes into account the imperfection of channel state information at transmitter and quality of service requirements of users. To facilitate the design of optimal SIC decoding policy on each subcarrier, we define a channel-to-noise ratio outage threshold. Subsequently, the considered non-convex optimization problem is recast as a generalized linear multiplicative programming problem, for which a globally optimal solution is obtained via employing the branch-and-bound approach. ...
