Abstract
Can product choice influence a person’s sense of self? Past research has shown that people choose products that reflect their self-image (e.g., Aaker 1997; Belk 1988; Gardner and Levy 1955; Levy 1959; Sirgy 1982). In other words, the choice of product is influenced by the consumer’s sense of self. In this research we examine the reverse relationship, namely, that product choice can directly affect the self and affirm one’s innermost personal values. We suggest that an attractive design for a product can have similar effects as an attractive physical appearance for a person. Further, on the basis of research in personal values, we propose that products that are aesthetically beautiful are indeed a form of self-affirmation. ...

Abstract
The authors identify and examine the effect of space-to-product ratio on consumer response; very generally, consumers perceive products as more valuable when more space is devoted to their display. In both lab and field studies, the authors find that this phenomenon influences total sales, purchase likelihood, and even perceived product experience (taste perceptions). More interstitial space increases perceptions of individual products as more aesthetically pleasing and the store as more prestigious. The authors find these effects across a variety of product categories and rule out a number of competing alternative explanations that are based on perceptions of product popularity, scarcity, assortment search difficulty, and messiness. ...

Abstract
The intense red-colored Hibiscus sabdariffa flowers are an inexpensive source of anthocyanins with potential to be used as natural, innocuous, and health-beneficial colorants. An anthocyanin-rich extract from hibiscus flowers was obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction. By a single-step process fractionation using a Sep-Pak C18 cartridge, the main hibiscus anthocyanins, delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside (Dp-samb) and cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside (Cy-samb), were separated and then characterized via NMR and HPLC-ESIMS data. Since Dp-samb was the most abundant anthocyanin identified in the extract, its colorant properties were studied by the pH jumps method, which allowed the calculation of the single acid–base equilibrium (pK'a 2.92), the acidity (pKa 3.70), and the hydration constants (pKh 3.02). Moreover, by using size-exclusion chromatography, new cyanidin-derived anthocyanins (with three or more sugar units) were successfully identified and reported for the first time in the hibiscus extract. ...

Abstract
Different enzymatic and nonenzymatic approaches were tested and compared to afford enantiopure homoallylic and allylic alcohols as building blocks in a total synthesis showcase. Thereby, highly enantioselective alcohol dehydrogenases and the P450 BM3 monooxygenase variant A74G L188Q were compared to classical asymmetric reagent-controlled allyl additions. Thus, the first total syntheses of the proposed structures for putaminoxins B/D and their respective enantiomers were accomplished. Detailed spectroscopic analysis of the newly synthesized compounds unraveled a discrepancy with respect to the reported structures of putaminoxins B/D. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that total synthesis is generally required for unequivocal assignment of configuration, because purely comparative NMR studies and judgment by analogy can lead to false predictions. ...

Abstract
The recommended laboratory diagnostic approach for Lyme disease is a standard two-tiered testing (STTT) algorithm where the first tier is typically an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) that if positive or equivocal is reflexed to Western immunoblotting as the second tier. bioMérieux manufactures one of the most commonly used first-tier EIAs in the United States, the combined IgM/IgG Vidas test (LYT). Recently, bioMérieux launched its dissociated first-tier tests, the Vidas Lyme IgM II (LYM) and IgG II (LYG) EIAs, which use purified recombinant test antigens and a different algorithm than STTT. The dissociated LYM/LYG EIAs were evaluated against the combined LYT EIA using samples from 471 well-characterized Lyme patients and controls. ...

Abstract
Nested RT-PCR (nPCR) and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) are well-established methods for monitoring minimal residual disease (MRD) in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Despite their remarkable sensitivity and specificity, both methods have inherent limitations, such as qualitative MRD evaluation and relative quantification. Herein, we used droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) to monitor MRD in 21 APL patients and compared its performance with nPCR and qPCR. After assessing the limit of detection (LOD) for each technique on serial dilutions of PML-RARA bcr1 and bcr3 transcripts ...

Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) types 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7, associated with a (CAG)n repeat expansion in coding sequences, are the most prevalent autosomal dominant ataxias worldwide (approximately 60% of the cases). In addition, the phenotype of SCA2 expansions has been now extended to Parkinson disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Their diagnosis is currently based on a PCR to identify small expanded alleles, followed by a second-level test whenever a false normal homozygous or a CAT interruption in SCA1 needs to be verified. Next-generation sequencing still does not allow efficient detection of these repeats. Here, we show the efficacy of a novel, rapid, and cost-effective method to identify and size pathogenic expansions in SCA1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 and recognize large alleles or interruptions without a second-level test. ...

Abstract
The cerebellum plays a critical role in sensorimotor control. However, how the specific circuits and plastic mechanisms of the cerebellum are engaged in closed-loop processing is still unclear. We developed an artificial sensorimotor control system embedding a detailed spiking cerebellar microcircuit with three bidirectional plasticity sites. ...

Abstract
Does the mere presence of big banks affect macroeconomic outcomes? We develop a theory of granularity for the banking sector by modeling heterogeneous banks charging variable markups. Using data for a large set of countries, we show that the banking sector is indeed “granular,” as the right tail of the bank size distribution follows a power law. ...

Abstract
In 1988, J. Ivlev proposed some (non-normal) modal systems which are semantically characterized by four-valued non-deterministic matrices in the sense of A. Avron and I. Lev. Swap structures are multialgebras (a.k.a. hyperalgebras) of a special kind, which were introduced in 2016 by W. Carnielli and M. Coniglio in order to give a non-deterministic semantical account for several paraconsistent logics known as logics of formal inconsistency, which are not algebraizable by means of the standard techniques. ...

Abstract
Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, exhibits a high genetic variability and has been classified into six discrete typing units (DTUs) named TcI through TcVI. This genetic diversity is believed to be associated with clinical characteristics and outcomes, but evidence supporting such associations has been limited. Herein, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of T. cruzi sequences of the mini-exon intergenic region obtained from a large cohort of pregnant women and newborns from Argentina, Honduras, and Mexico, to assess parasite genetic diversity and possible associations with congenital transmission. ...

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify factors influencing patient preferences for communication from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) during natural disasters. The 37-question, probability-based survey collected data from 2,264 VA users living in the Northeast US logistic regression analyses were conducted for top four modalities, and age was identified as the most important predictor of communication preferences. The findings suggest that the use of multiple modalities, such as telephone, television, radio, text, and email is necessary to successfully disseminate information and effectively reach all VA patients in the event of large-scale emergencies. ...
